Wellington High School is hosting the Palm Beach Catholic Forensic League Debate Tournament on Saturday, October 12. This is an all-day tournament, a fundraiser for our program, and will include around a dozen speech, debate, and forensic events.
We estimate around 400+ students and 100+ adults will be on campus, and will include all debate and forensic events in roughly 75 classrooms. And we need your help!
We had our first parent/student organizational meeting tonight. Around 5-6 parents were there (thank you!), and several others indicated they wanted to attend, but were unable to.
WE HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, AT 7pm IN THE DEBATE ROOM (4-104) – WE NEED AS MANY PARENTS AS POSSIBLE TO SHOW UP!
Attached is a volunteer signup form for the tournament. This is for all parents and all varsity students. It would also be wonderful for parents to fill out and turn in a form by the September 24 meeting, as we will need adult supervision and assistance that weekend. The document is broken down into several key areas:
(1) SHIFTS – There are shifts on Saturday. There are “crossover” shifts, usually covering lunch, which will allow us to have ample volunteers during the busiest times. There is also an important shift Friday after school gets out; this is when we will need parents to be on campus to begin the setup process, including bringing beverages and concession items from our holding room into the kitchen coolers and cafeteria, putting event room signs on the doors of classrooms, etc.
(2a) VARSITY STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS – varsity students are encouraged to sign up for multiple areas, as we want to ensure we have enough in each area based on specific shifts and other needs. Key assignments include: Tab Room Assistance (working with tournament officials and tabulation staff), Saturday Lunch (judge lounge and cafeteria), Concession Stand (cafeteria), and Classroom/Hall Monitors.
(2b) ADULT ASSIGNMENTS – we want to ensure for safety and liability reasons that at least one adult is stationed with students in areas where money will be exchanged (Concessions in particular). We will need multiple adults in helping with dinner and lunch in both locations (cafeteria and media center). We will need adults to help transport meals as needed.
(3) CASH DONATIONS – In order to reduce costs, we are requesting cash donations from every debate family, so that in the days leading into the tournament, we can purchase items we were unable to get donated, as well as purchase perishable items the days of the tournament. We are asking for $15 per novice family and $20 per varsity family. Donations should be turned in by Wednesday, October 9. IF YOU CAN BRING THIS TO THE PARENT VOLUNTEER MEETING, THAT WOULD BE GREAT!
We appreciate your involvement and assistance in the positive education of your child in advance!
