Congratulations to former Palm Beach School District debaters, Wellington’s Carrie McDaniel and Boca Raton’s Josh Schulster, for taking home the first place trophy at the Social Justice Debates at Morehouse College the weekend of October 4-6. The Florida State University Parliamentary Debate team, coached by Wellington debate alumni Greg Foster, defeated formidable opponents from Vanderbilt and George Washington University on the topic, Resolved: The United States Federal Government should provide direct compensation to all African-Americans who descended from slaves as reparations for slavery.
The Social Justice Debates are an annual intercollegiate debate series founded by Morehouse College and The George Washington University. The only intercollegiate debate series in the world dedicated to social justice topics, the Social Justice Debates aspire to promote productive and rigorous debates challenging current and future thought leaders to consider issues of justice in relation to the distribution of wealth, opportunity, and privilege in U.S. society. The Social Justice Debates are a civic debate education program coordinated by the Civic Debate Conference.
